Chicago- Future Prentice competition entry

Successful architectural design is an ultimate art form of both visual beauty and technology.

The design concept is to preserve this architectural gem and maintain its iconic status in both architectural design and the wider community. Therefore only Site A is chosen. As such the main structure of the clove-shaped tower and the podium and the spatial relationship between the two have been maintained. This is because ‘not- demolishing’ and ‘introducing-a-new-useto-an-existing’ is not good enough but it would be ideal to preserve the ‘architectural’ essence by the original architect - Bertrand Goldberg.

The clove shaped tower is imagined to be a piece of precious jewellery displayed in a jewellerybox; the existing podium being the bedding-box and the new research tower being the lid. The lid cantilever approx 6.5 feet outside the podium making it look like a opened box, with the bottom of the reseach tower entirely open.

Through the full height glazing on the corridor opposite the research rooms the cloved shaped tower (converted into private hospital and care homes for the retired) will be visible at all times. This is intend to answer the needs for lack of
hospital beds for the elderly when they need to stay for multiple checks, private care during recovering from small scale operations.

means the transforming of
the destructive energy from
earthquake into something
positive and most importantly,
all the effort behind it.

Undercroft of theatre is linked to the space outside,
the garden and protected from weather.
Walls and varying ceiling heights provide interesting
spaces and pockets of spaces.
